Positive Self-Talk for Effective New Year’s Resolutions

Hi Friends,

At the start of a brand-new year, we rigorously start setting fresh goals and forming New Year’s resolutions. Do you find yourself reflecting on last year’s resolutions and feeling disappointed that you did not see them through? One of the primary reasons for not achieving goals is negative self-talk.

Self-talk is internal conversation with yourself, like your own personal chatter. In order to be open to beneficial opportunities, and have a positive outlook on life, yourself, and others, you must avoid using negative self-talk.

Here are some examples of self-talk:

Negative Self-Talk

  • I can’t do this
  • I’m not good enough
  • I am too ______ (short, slow, untrained) to ever complete this goal

Positive Self-Talk

  • I am able to do or learn this
  • I am good enough
  • I will figure out how to compensate for ______ to achieve this goal

Make a conscious effort to monitor the way you process information. If you are constantly dwelling on past issues and using negative words to describe yourself, or your goals, you must make a habit of retraining your brain. Self-talk actually sends messages to your subconscious brain to form habits that coincide with what you are thinking.

If you continue to use the same negative self-talk, your subconscious will keep your habits aligned with the familiarity of past (and possibly bad) habits. On the flip side, using positive self-talk aids in reprogramming your brain to start forming goal-oriented habits. You will be on your way to realizing those New Year’s goals before you know it!

  3. Many individuals are actually unaware of how negative their self-talk is. What a person says to themselves internally is generally reflected by the things they actually say.

    Rob Bremer said,

“If you had a friend who talked to you like you sometimes talk to yourself, would you continue to hang around with that person?”

And the answer is that many people wouldn’t. A coach can help draw your awareness to your self-talk, particularly when it’s negative so that you can work on improving it.

  5. from what I read and I am not the best reader, that the self – talk should be about the ego.just think how much it gets in the way of keeping any resolution from being completed.could it be because of not loveing oneself(honestly and truly) and saying (10-20 times a day)how thankful one is for what one has.understand that if the resolution does not come from the combined feelings of the mind, the heart, and the menta a resolution will never come to be. one must ask how open is ones mind?how big is ones ego?how much does one love oneself?how many have people have one forgiven?how many times has one said thank you?if all of the above questions are have a positive answer then there is a better chance all resolutions being completed!wish everyone change from negative thinking to positive thinking to have a wonderful new year.

  6. John,

Thanks for sharing this great info! This is definitely one of the top ten most important habits that everyone should have.

    Happy Holidays!

  7. John,
I would like to express my gratitude for your work. I recently bought the Having it all audio program and the BONUS audio has become part of my daily morning and evening meditation.
Today’s blog and the deep seated belief of not being good enough came in my life from growing up in a communist country Romania, and my absent father made me always go into the direction of “not good enough”.
I love your approach of science and spiritual and my life has changed drastically since the first time I saw the movie “The Secret”.
I heard you say that your mother is from Romania. I wonder if you speak Romanian. I grow up with three languages: Hungarian,German and Romanian.
You are making a great contribution to human kind and I spread the word wherever I go.
Love you John, and you are so good looking too! 🙂

  8. This comes at a time when I am feeling kind of down. the holidays have that affect on me because of living alone. I am a very positive person and listen to positive thinking audios, and I read alot of inspirational material. However, these times cause me to look at life in a different light. I constantly have to remind myself that this is short lived and to stop feeding my subconscience negative thoughts. Thank you John for expressing your thoughts at the right time.

  10. If you can see it and believe it ,you can achieve it. Where have I heard this?
Thank you for your genuine approach to living life.

  23. emergency help is needed with all this 2009 self positive talk.collectively we need to find a better way to help our heros.those whom are coming home from the war with physical wounds and those with psychological wounds. suicide is on the increase.only families who’s son or daughter came home looked okey (normal).then due to post war traumas committed suicide.I feel it’s sad with all the positive thinking salespeople and high level religious people. we all need to find away to really say that not being macho is okey, men do cry!next get rid of the better than active ego.positive action is needed any suggestions? have a great new,may god bless.

  24. Awesome tips – I’m printing these out for easy reference. It seems so simple sometimes to keep this in mind, but it’s also somehow so easy to forget.

  25. What a great article about New Year’s Resolutions and the value of self talk! What we say to ourselves truly does create our world. This starts with what we believe, and by changing these beliefs — we can change our world. I’d suggest the book Free Mind Free Body to anyone that would like to learn about gently changing their self-talk and learning about the power of their mind. Our lives improve when we create with conscious thought!
