What is your true net worth?

Hi friends,

So many people look at their financial status as an indicator of their net worth and I frankly don’t agree with this logic.

We are so caught up in our society by seeing how much each of us has financially but the true picture can’t be that shallow or empty. How can we allow green paper with ink on it to define our “net worth”?

Let me walk you through what I see as the real measure of your true “Net Worth.”

Our lives are multi faceted and thank god we are all created with a multitude of talents, abilities and varying interests. What if we started to look at our true net worth by looking at life as it is, and not just through the jaded eyes of finances.

Since we all basically are playing six games simultaneously, lets measure each section and give each one a point factor that determines the “net worth” of each section. The areas to consider are. Spiritual, Relationships, Contribution, Financial, Health and Career.

So for example…

We all have relationships with friends, family, co-workers, maybe kids, etc. So ask yourself on a scale of one to 10, what point value do you give your relationship with…

Your kids, your spouse, your best friends, your colleagues, etc.

Give each one a point value and then I move on to another section.

What you’ll find as I have, is that you may be at a 10 in contribution but a 6 financially. Relationships and spirituality may be at a 9 and health may be slightly lagging behind.

In either case, I’ll bet you that when you look at the whole picture rather than just a small part like money, you’ll see that your “Real Net Worth” is much greater than you gave yourself credit for.

We all go through the ups and downs of life and I find it easier to go through them when I refer to an area that is peaking versus and area that is not doing as well. It’s the ebb and flow of life and nobody is impervious to it.

Start to look at yourself and your life on many fronts and you’ll always be able to find an area that you are content with or can quickly improve.

Learn to change what you can and let go of what you can’t.

I wish you a great day and remember to smile; you just might make someone else smile as well.

And, pass this blog to friends and colleagues.

John

  6. Hi John,

Great post. One way that I remind myself of my net worth is to have a gratitude book. I keep it on my bedside table and in the evening I pick a page and read it, and whenever I think of something else that I am grateful for or do well, I write it down. It serves as a great reminder for those days where the conscious mind has chosen not to remember your true value.

  19. I would bet you that if you ask people to list the 6 areas of life from most important to lest important, you would find Relationships in most cases would be the most important and financial & Career would be between middle to one of the lest important. Then if you ask people where they spend the most time. I think you will find people spend the most time with Career and Financial, and Relationships take the back burner. Why are we like that? If Relationship is the most important we should been spending the most time at it, shouldn’t we?!

  32. My view is this: you create your own reality. Imagine for a moment someone said to you this: “hey, you don’t remember me, but I know you. you came here upon this earth because YOU chose to do so. You wanted to feel the love, and the pain and the heartbreak and the joy and the success.
OK. WE’RE ok with that. we just wanted to remind you that is why you came – for the lesson… YOU chose it.

    This made me sob.

  36. I like what you said. Too many people judge themselves and others just by the money.

Life is full of blessings. No matter how little we think we have, there’s always someone else who has even less.

I also consider my potential to improve all those areas and my attitude a big part of my assets.

  38. I think, that is very important to work individually on ourselves. See more hightlights in others; not be too judge. Money are important, but not all. Being appreciate for people who sourounding us, say thank you, for little things, smile is always great Icebreaker for any situations.

  53. Thank you, John. I had just been filling in the workbook for Having It All. I had purposely left the net worth line blank. Whereas, I had appreciated looking at the many different aspects of life,to get it down to a small space recording net worth felt uncomfortable. Your article validated this feeling.

  54. Yeah, it’s a nice reminder of what my parents taught us. Count your blessings daily. Or, as we all say now: feel gratitude.

  58. Sound thought. It goes right along with something else I read recently that stated; “How well we’re doing is not necessarily measured by how much we make, but by our net worth”. Understanding the truer definition of “net worth” helps to put that in even better perspective.

  60. Yes, I agree with your comments. We need to be balanced human beings and learn to work on all areas. I think I’m doing very well. I know I can definitely improve in some; but, can’t we all.

  71. So very true John. All too often we foolishly measure our prosperity against monetary value. Similar to your discussion, I try to focus on my improvements and increases in all those areas of my life and view the progress made. When the downtimes are upon me, if I reflect upon the improvements I have made in all areas of my life, I feel renewed and measurably valuable and feel I am truly living a prosperous life.

  79. I look at it this way, your spirit is the only real part of you. In turn if you dedicate your real value to your spirit it will only enhance the other five in its appropriate timings, thus nothing is left to chance and thus you will live a truly enligthened life, at leas this is how i look at it. 81. Many Thanks John,
The more we study and immerse ourselves in our total picture the more we realise that certain aspects of our life do not gel.
I have always had a passion for helping people because I have always felt wealthy and now I project myself as someone who “is on your side”.
But sometimes, if it does’nt feel right, it is far better to just walk away with the thought that sometimes people just don’t want helping, it’s not their fault it’s the way they have been brought up to think, sad but true.
As James Ray say’s – “avoid anything that weakens you” –
